Comparison of moth diversity between lightly and heavily logged sites in a tropical rain forest [Sabah, Malaysia]

Comparison of moth diversity was made between lightly and heavily logged sites in the rain forest of Deramakot, Sabah. The more heavily logged area gave a higher number of moth individuals but fewer species. Samples of the heavily logged site were boosted by the presence of many individuals of Tiracola plagiata Walker, a species that favours open disturbed habitats. There was a more even distribution of species in the lightly logged area, which showed higher moth diversity, as measured by Williams Alpha diversity index, than the heavily logged. Dissimilarity of the moth fauna between the two sites was high. There was an almost total absence of Stictopterinae, a moth group where one lineage is known to have dipterocarps amongst their host plants, in the heavily logged site. A new record for Borneo, Ceira ordgara Schaus (Family:Notodontidae), was found at the lightly logged area.
