The effects of progress in the plant breeding over last 15 years have been presented. The effectiveness of plant breeding in Poland measured as the number of new registred varieties increased significantly. The average yield increase due to cereal breeding over the period 1986-95 was 35,6 kg per ha/year. For the last five years the increase was 46,3 kg. The highest yield increase, as a result of breeding progress was found for winter wheat and for triticale. The average value of yield progress due to cereal breeding was 25,6 kg for the last five years
