The aim of this work is to study the effect of saline water on soil salinity, absorption of nitrogen and yeld of the two varieties of broad bean A (ILB 1814) and B (Giza Blanca). The experiment was carried out on a lysimétre set-up, using three waters of increasing salinity. Three methods were used to study soil salinity: salt balance, soil water sampling with porous cups and soil sampling. The comparison between the salt balance and the sampling by porous cups reveals the exchange between calcium and sodium at the absorption complex and the precipitation of calcium bicarbonate.Variety B, slightly earlier then variety A, is much more sensitive to salinity, wich corresponds with the pronounced salinity effect on the biological nitrogen contribution. The difference between both varieties could be attributed to a difference in salt sensitivity between the rhizobia of the two varieties.
