Effect of dried beet pulp on the performance of weaned piglets

A total of 668 3-weeks old piglets were divided in 2 groups and fed for 6-7 weeks a control (C) and a experimental feed containing 120 g/kg of sugar beet pulp diet (SBP). Live weight (LW) and feed intake (FI) were recorded every 2 weeks. The dead and sick piglets were weighted and removed. Faecal samples were collected from 16 piglets at 5, 6, 7 and 9 weeks of age to be analysed. SBP diet did not affected FI and significantly reduced ADG only in the last experimental period. The percentage of piglets removed was 3.5% in the SBP diet and 11% in the C diet. Faecal DM content of SBP piglets increased throughout the trial from 207 to 243 g/kg, whereas that of the C group decreased from 287 to 255 g/kg. There were not signs of diarrhoea. SBP faeces contained significantly more acetic and propionic acid (16.4 vs 11.9, and 7.1 vs. 6.0, mg/g of DM, respectively), with a lower presence of Clostridium spp (1.95 vs. 2.47 log UFC/g). SBP diet had a DM digestibility 2% lower than the C one (P0.01), but dietary fibre digestibility was 6% higher (P0.01). The results confirm a considerable ability of young pig to digest and perform on diets containing high levels of SBP
