Ornamental nursery production is one of the most specialized examples of intensive agriculture, with a great use of resources to maximize plant growth and reduce production time in an effort to capitalize on-sale profits. Because of this, the "green industry" is often considered a non-point (or diffused) polluting industry, due to the low efficiency in the management practices, that may lead to nutrient laden runoff (effluent) leaving the nursery site. Therefore, a great concern for the declining quality of water in watersheds and aquifers has risen and the nursery industry is now called to develop effective procedures to reduce the threat (or even prevent) for pollution. An overview of the main techniques to reduce the environmental impact of nursery practices is given; more in details, some general recommendations to decrease (or avoid) nutrient losses (N above all) in the runoff waters are reported, as well as water regulations to contain water usage and increase the quality of tail water leaving the nursery. Some considerations on reuse (water, compost, plastic) in the nursery industry are also given

Tale attivita' richiede un esteso sfruttamento di risorse ambientali non facilmente reintegrabili (per esempio l'acqua di falda) e un uso consistente di prodotti per la fertilizzazione, che provoca un livello residuale nelle acque e nei suoli interessati spesso preoccupante. Vengono quindi esaminate le problematiche e illustrate le prospettive di impiego di tecniche per la riduzione dell'impatto ambientale, con particolare riferimento alla gestione della nutrizione, all'impiego dell'acqua e al riuso di prodotti e/o risorse nel vivaismo ornamentale
