Since 2000 social networks have emerged, revolutionizing the way we stay in touch and share content with others. Publication-based social networks have offered similar functions within an academic context, beginning in 2008.Many researchers are registered on these sites. However, although there are some experts in this domain, many do so without fully exploiting them and without the backing of their respective institutions. Further, they proceed without a solid knowledge of the problems of digital identity or how to take advantage of related tools.[br/]This phenomenon has plagued our institutions, with respect to the control of knowledge and the dissemination of information, the reputation and visibility of the institution, the relationship between bodies of information distributed on networks and information systems and relative to each institution’s research. Another problem that arises is that of improving research visibility and the creation of collaborations.[br/]The presentation will introduce some academic networks, their main functions, how researchers can benefit from them and how to help researchers better utilize social networks. Further, the session will show how institutions might benefit from this activity, while also keeping a watchful eye on its use.
