In recent years, mixed plantings have attracted increasing interest among organic vegetable growers in the middle, because theoretically there is a possibility with their help reduce damage caused by pests. In several countries, including Latvia, the compatibility of different species is studied and the practical use of mixed plantings. Exactly so our breeders can be useful in others lessons learned in countries. In Germany, at the Bavarian State Institute of Viticulture and Horticulture (Bayerische Landesanstalt für Wein und Gemüsebau) trials conducted in 2019 and 2020 show that mixed plantings help protect cabbage against aphids (Psylloides). These aphids suck sap from plants, disturbing their growth and development. Already in 2019, good results were achieved by growing cabbage with leaf mustard and white clover (efficiency 33 and 31% respectively). Only the use of insect repellent mesh led to better results with efficacy of 88%. The UIREKA project has been going on in the Netherlands for several years, within the framework of which several problems of onion protection are being studied and their solutions are sought. Looking for opportunities among them reduce the use of plant protection products. So in 2020, several methods of onion protection were tried. Obviously the topic of mixed plantings at the moment is becoming more and more relevant in Europe, and Latvia is not far behind — the Institute of Horticulture has also implemented several projects that touch on the solutions discussed in the above article.
