Ovine Livestock Activities and General Problems in Uzundere District of Erzurum Province

This study was carried out in 35 small cattle farms selected by sampling method in 12 districts of Uzundere in order to determine the current situation and problems of sheep and goat farms in Uzundere district of Erzurum. The average age of the breeders surveyed is 48.7 years old. It was determined that 54.3% of the sheep in the farms were Morkaraman and its cross, 31.4% of it was Hemşin and its cross, 14.3% of it was Akkaraman and its cross. It has been determined that a significant part of the business owners (80%) are semi-nomadic, 60% of the shelters are closed and 40% of them are semi-open. 85.7% of the enterprises obtain rams/billy goats from their own herd and 14.2% from neighboring herds. 37.2% of the breeders keep rams or goats for 2-3 years, and 62.8% for 4-5 years. It has been reported that the vast majority of births (94.2%) occur as a single birth and 5.7% as twin births. The average kid or lamb mortality rate is 10% across the farms. Breeders as important problems; They showed that feed prices and infrastructure costs are high, while product sales prices are low and they cannot find a shepherd. It has been determined that the most common health problems are digestive tract diseases (60%) and respiratory tract diseases (37%), and businesses mostly have various preventive vaccinations. In general, it has been observed that the lack of physical infrastructure in the enterprises negatively affects the productivity and animal health. Other important problems are the lack of knowledge and capital insufficiency of the business owners about breeding, the low productivity of the breeds they raise and the extensive character of the breeding.
