Persistent organic pollutants in the agricultural sector.
2021
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), especially obsolete pesticides pose a significant environmental and health concern in Eastern Europe, stemming largely from the overuse and mismanagement of pesticides during the Soviet era. Many of the chemicals of concern are now banned or unusable because of long-term storage. In order to reduce the risks, there is a need to strengthen national legislation, establish Action Plans for the disposal of obsolete pesticides and take measures to prevent their future re-accumulation. Georgia and Estonia are post-Soviet countries seeking to create a safe and POPs-free environment for which they are taking appropriate legislative and practical measures. Ref. 9.
