Ichthyofaunal Diversity of Sikka Coast, Gulf of Kachchh, Gujarat

The vast intertidal region on the Sikka coast harbours various fertile ecosystems like mangroves, coral reefs, seaweed and sea grasses which support various biota including fishes. The present study aimed to document the marine ichthyofaunal diversity along the Sikka coast located on the northern coast in the Gulf of Kachchh, Gujarat. During the present study, a total of 102 fish species belonging to 2 classes, 22 orders, 53 families, and 72 genera were recorded from November 2021 to April 2021. Eupercaria was found to be the dominant order (21.56%, 22 species) followed by Clupeiformes (11.76%, 12 species), and Carangiformes (10.78%, 11 species). The highest number of species were recorded from the family Carangidae followed by Mugilidae and Sparidae. Out of 102 species, 97 species were either Least Concern or Data Deficient in the IUCN Red List Status, 3 species were VU (Vulnerable) and 2 species were NT (Near Threatened). Among the recorded fish species, 64% of fish species were carnivores while 21% of fishes were herbivores or planktivores while the rest of the species were omnivores.
