2001

The demand for fresh young 'pandan' nuts is increasing in Malaysia and Asia. FASSB started planting 'pandan' coconut commercially at Bukit Cerakah Station and Pusat Perkhidmatan Pertanian Tun Razak (PPPTR) in 1994 and 1996 respectively with a total area of 31 hectares. A maturity index based on the development of the inflorescence two whorls above the fruit bunch to be harvested has been developed as the harvesting indicator. It is accurate in arriving at the specific stage of maturity and is also very easy to learn and apply in the field. A guideline on how to use this maturity index is given.
