Water hyacinth treatment systems provided good removal for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and nitrate nitrogen. Ninety six percent removal was achieved for BOD and nitrate nitrogen at loadings of 17 g BOD/m2/day and 9.5 g nitrate+ nitrogen/m2/day, respectively. Removal of 55% and 43%, respectively were achieved for ammonium nitrogen and total nitrogen. These removals were obtained at loadings of 2.6 g total nitrogen/m2/day and 1.65 g ammonium nitrogen/m2/day. High concentrations + of calcium and nitrate nitrogen seemed to affect BOD and chemical oxygen demand removal efficiencies.
