Effects of soil amendments on soil chemical properties and growth of alfalfa ((Medicago sativa L.) seedlings

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was selected for growth performance on a typical acidic soil of Bungor series. The experiment was conducted in ghisshouse for agronomic performance under a different soil amendment. The treatments were, controls, lime/GML (14.72tons/ ha), NPK (33.6kg/ ha, 55kg/ ha, 224kg/ ha, respectively), sheep manure (5% w/w), chicken dung (5% w/w) and bunch ash (Empty fruit bunch) (5% w/w). Among all treatments BA had the highest pH value followed by CD+NPK+GML, CD, CSM+NPK+GML, CSM and NPK. BA was identified giving the highest significant different in pH compared to the other treatments at p 0.05. The cation exchange capacity had mean values ranging from 8.03 to 3.28 cmol c1kg soil. Statistically, CSM was identified giving the highest significant different in CEC compared to the other treatments. There was a significant different of OC on soil treated with CSM+NPK+GML, CD+NPK+GML,CD and BA compared to the OC content in the control. The relatively higher amounts of OC in these soils are associated to the application of organic fertilizers (composts). In the CSM treated soil, mean total dry weight. yield was found to be the highest at 1.49 g followed by CSM+GML+NPK, GML+NPK, GML, CD+GML+NPK, NPK, CD and control with value of 1.00 g, 0.87g, 0.84g, 0.79g,0.55g, 0.53g and 0.43g, respectively. CSM was identified giving the highest significant different in dry matter yield compared to the other treatments at p0.05. The dry matter yield of treatments, control, CD, NPK, CD+GML+NPK and GML+NPK did not give a significant effect on the dry matter yield.
