QTL [Quantitative Trait Loci] mapping for agonomic, yield, and iron and zinc biofortification traits using IRO5F102 X IR69428 DH population

Fe and Zn deficiencies are among the most common nutritional disorders worldwide. Development of high Fe and Zn rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties is one of the sustainable and cost-effective approaches for reducing micronutrient deficiencies. Identification of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs), molecular markers, and major genes for high grain Fe and Zn can help in more precise and faster development of micronutrient-dense rice varieties. A double-haploid population from IRO5F102 x IR69428 cross was evaluated for two seasons at IRR [International Rice Research Institute] Laguna, Philippines. Inclusive composite interval mapping (ICIM) identified 26 QTLs for ten agronomic traits and grain element concentrations that explain 7% to 27.5% of the phenotypic variance. Further, two QTLs and five QTLs, respectively, were identified for Fe and Zn that co-located with several candidate gene (OsZIP7, OsNA33, and OsNRAMP7). The results highlight priority QTLs and candidate genes for further molecular characterization in downstream biofortification studies.
