Variability agronomic, yield, and iron and zinc biofortification traits in IR95040 x KALIBORO::IRGC77201-1 RILs population

Micronutrient malnutrition is one of the prevailing health problems in the world affecting a large proportion of populations in rice-consuming countries. Breeding rice varieties with enhanced levels of grain elemental concentrations is considered the most sustainable and cost-effective approach to alleviate malnutrition. Variability in grain Zn concentrations can be exploited through breeding to develop nutrient-dense varieties. Phenotypic assessment for ten agronomic, yield, and biofortification was carried out in IR95040 x KALIBORO::IRGC77201-1 RILs population during the 2017DS and 2017WS. Results show large variability for all traits evaluated and high heritability values for DF, PH, GL, TGW, and Zn. Consistent strong negative correlations was observed between YLD and Zn. Eight RILs were identified to possess high Zn and good yield potential.
