英语. Carnival in French Guiana is a time for coming together and subversion, combining entertainment, artistic creation and cultural affirmation. Over the years, carnival-goers have forged a unique identity that blends African and Amerindian rhythms and traditions with European festivities. These are showcased through the cultural skills of the characters and masks, the melodies and dance styles, and the culinary and cosmetic preparations used by the carnival-goers. These practices, now organised into rituals, have been passed down through the generations and are one of the elements of memory. An interdisciplinary approach combining the humanities and social sciences with the sciences of health will be used to study the practices of carnival-goers in French Guiana. The thesis is based around two research questions: 1) the evolution and adaptation of the carnival to the context of French Guiana in relation to the Latin American basin, and 2) highlighting the use of biodiversity, particularly during the carnival preparation programmes.

法语. Le carnaval en Guyane est une période de rassemblement et de subversion au cours de laquelle se mélangent les divertissements, la création artistique et l’affirmation culturelle. A travers les temps, les carnavaliers ont su modeler une identité unique où s’est adaptée les rythmes et les traditions africaines et amérindiennes aux festivités européennes. La tradition carnavalesque guyanaise regroupe divers types de festivités dans lesquels sont valorisés les savoirs culturels, cultuels, gastronomiques et cosmétiques des populations régionales. Les personnages et les masques, les mélodies et les styles de danses, mais aussi les préparations alimentaires et cosmétiques des carnavaliers mettent en scène la mémoire des populations et les usages de la biodiversité amazonienne. C’est à travers une approche interdisciplinaire associant les sciences humaines et sociales aux sciences technologie et santé que seront étudiées les pratiques des carnavaliers de Guyane. Le travail de thèse s’articule autour de deux questions de recherche : 1) l’évolution et l’adaptation du carnaval au contexte guyanais par rapport au bassin d’Amérique latine, et 2) la mise en lumière de l’utilisation de la biodiversité notamment lors des programmes de préparations carnavalesques.
