A simple and inexpensive method was used to fabricate a hydrophobic coating on wood surfaces using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and nanoclay particles (mortmorillonite) following a typical Stober method. Briefly, nano clay particles were prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of mortmorillonite under alkaline condition, followed by hydrophobic modification with hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) to produce long-chain alkyl group onto the wood surface. The surface morphology and microstructure of the hybrid coatings can be readily controlled by adjusting the nanoclay particle loadings in the PDMS matrix, and the surface roughness and wettability of the coated wood was accordingly modified. When silica-PDMS mass ratio was raised to 2:1, hierarchical microstructures with interconnected nanopores were formed in the coating, allowing the generation of superhydrophobic wood surfaces, highlighting their potential for various practical applications.
