OsbZIP62 Positively Regulates Drought and Salt Stress Tolerance and ABA Signaling in Rice

The basic leucine zipper transcription factors are involved in the various cellular signaling pathways including the ABA and abiotic stress response. The Arabidopsis group A bZIP is reported to play an important role in the ABA signaling and drought stress response. The overexpression of rice OsbZIP62 gene increased the drought stress tolerance in rice, and OsbZIP62 is an ortholog of Arabidopsis group A bZIP. Photoperiod and circadian rhythms controlled the expression of OsbZIP62 only in the leaves. Furthermore, the OsbZIP62 gene showed a different responsive induction in the leaves and roots. The OsbZIP62 promoter region contains several cis-acting elements, which are consistent with the expression patterns of OsbZIP62 gene. OsbZIP62 can interact with Stress-/ABA-activated protein kinases1, 2, 4, and 6, which have been known to phosphorylate OsbZIPs in rice. These interactions were detected within the nuclei. The transgenic rice overexpressed the OsbZIP62 gene exhibited an increase of drought and high-salinity stress tolerance. In addition, the transgenic rice showed ABA hypersensitive phenotype. Our results indicate that OsbZIP62 is involved in ABA and sugar signaling response and plays a positive role in drought and salt stress tolerance.
