Haas, Robert
Abstract: Guidance and nutritional data concerning the healthful consumption of fast foods are provided for the general public. Information is provided to demonstrate that fast foods are not junk foods. A nutritional approach is described for the enjoyment of fast foods without the danger of excessively high caloric, fat, cholesterol, and salt intakes. This approach also allows for maximum intake of vitamins and minerals. Nutritional information is tabulated for over 150 individual foods available from many of the major fast food establishments. Per serving data are given for calories, protein, sodium, carbohydrate, fat, cholesterol, several vitamins (A, C, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin), calcium, and iron. A brief commentary is given on the economic savings of fast foods; the nutritional aspects of pizza; hamburger establishments; fried chicken; Mexican food; and ice cream treats. (wz).
