Abstract: This book discusses the retardation of aging and disease and the extension of life span by dietary restriction. This publicaiton is intended to undertake a critical review of the field to date, to present interpretations of many of the phenomena involved, and to suggest future avenues of research. Topics include: the goals of gerontology; strategies for increasing life span; historical phases of dietary restriction research; the effects of dietary restriction on disease; how does dietary restriciton retard aging?; and prospects for retarding human aging by dietary restriction.
