This case study examines how content analysis can be a useful method for studying a variety of topics. It looks at both quantitative and qualitative content analysis, talks about strengths and weaknesses of the method, and explores the contrast between manifest and latent content. By focusing particularly on four published studies that used content analysis to look at the sociology curriculum in the United States, this case study examines issues related to clarifying your research question, operationalizing your variables, choosing a sample, and collecting and analyzing your data when content analysis is the method used in research. It also talks about how content analysis is a particularly appropriate method for doing research with undergraduates.
