1980
Ernest, Arlene E.
Abstract: Guidelines for breastfeeding an infant with phenylketonuria (PKU) are presented in this manual developed for health professionals with support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Rationale for the use of human milk in feeding PKU infants is provided, considering its protein, amino acid pattern, and nitrogen content. Aspects of dietary management of PKU include hospitalization, initial prescription, dietary management after control is established, and monitoring of serum phenylalanine and other clinical chemistries.
显示更多 [+] 显示较少 [-]Topics related to prescribing and calculating diets for infants with PKU include 1) feeding of human milk and Lofenalac, 2) supplementary vitamins and minerals, 3) fluid requirements, 4) recommendations for the feeding schedule, 5) dietary change, 6) challenges, 7) introduction of semisolid and solid foods, 8) weaning, and 9) calculating the dietary prescription for weaning. An extensive references list is provided. Tables show recommended daily amounts of phenylalanine, protein, and energy for infants with PKU, the nutrient composition of Rofenalac and human milk, daily requirements for various nutrients in infancy, and vitamin and mineral supplementation products. Appendices examine practical aspects of the management of breastfeeding and several case histories on treatment of PKU infants.
