The effects of two dietary fats and ascorbic acid supplementation on the sterol excretion of young women

Abstract: The effects of beef tallow, corn oil, a vitamin C supplement on serum lipids and on fecal excretion of bile acids and neutral sterols in healthy young women were investigated. The literature search focused on sterol sources, sterol output, the effects of dietary cholesterol on sterol balance, cholesterol and dietary fat, and ways PUFA might cause a decrease in serum cholesterol. Comparisons were made after 9 and 18-day intervals of the 3 diet periods; after both periods, serum cholesterol levels were lower for subjects on the corn oil diet. Vitamin C supplements had no apparent effect. Fecal sterols showed no significant differences, although fecal sitasterol was significantly higher in those receiving corn oil. Study results indicate that dietary lipids influence serum lipids of healthy young women, but vitamin C does not.
