Maternal nutrition and lactational infertility

Abstract: The scientific evidence relating maternal undernutrition to lactational infertility is examined in this collection of research papers from one of a series of nutrition workshops sponsored by Nestlé. The demographic significance of this relationship is explored, particularly for developing countries where additional fertility-limiting measures would be recommended (i.e. areas where improved maternal nutritional status might decrease the efficacy of lactation as a contraceptive). Workshop participants included leading researchers in the fields of nutrition, obstetrics, endocrinology, epidemiology, and reproductive biology. Topics include 1) the endocrine control of lactational infertility and the contribution of nutritional factors, 2) the importance of night feeding and the role of the infant's feeding pattern in the mother-infant relationship, and 3).
