Extract: The purpose of this study is to analyze the prospects for irrigation in a section of the Texas Panhandle for alternative levels of corn and energy prices in 1990. This is accomplished by (1) estimating the net returns from irrigation farming using groundwater and dryland farming, (2) evaluating the effects of energy prices, crop prices, water situations, and land classes on net returns, and (3) deriving the switch points where irrigation is converted to dryland farming. Although importing water is another alternative, it is not profitable so far.
