Abstract: Educational practices relating to young children are changing to meet social and economic pressures, new theories of learning and new understanding of child development. These factors are reflected in teaching methods and curriculum content. The need for early education is assessed in terms of changing life styles, working mothers, changing parental roles, influence of television, child abuse, mobility and conflict of educational philosophy. Curriculum planning includes teaching methods, learning activities and key concepts for language arts, mathematics, social studies, health education, play and creative arts. The organization of the center emphasizes parental involvement. Physical facilities can be tailored to the needs and resources of the community, or to the needs of special groups of children. The programs may be directed to the gifted, retarded, maladjusted, handicapped or culturally different child.
