Abstract: Basic and clinical research on the interrelationships of diabetes, obesity, and the oft-accompanying vascular diseases is presented in this two part monograph which examines these disorders at the cellular, tissue, molecular, metabolic, hormonal, and nutritional levels. Part one includes basic principles of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and considers related factors such as obesity, size and number of adipocytes, insulin resistance, glucagon, catecholamines, cortisol, and growth factor. Part 2 covers energy balance, insulin secretion, metabolic and psychological regulation of food intake, interrelationships among key tissues in the utilization of metabolic substrates, minerals and trace elements, diabetes in the child and nutritional management of diabetes mellitus.
