Abstract: As energy is used for so many processes throughout the food system, fossil fuel shortages and higher energy prices will affect the production of food, especially in developed nations. Energy is an essential resource for crop and livestock production and for food processing, storage and preparation. More and more energy will be needed to generate food for an increasing world population. The greatest impact has been felt by small farmers. Energy availability has also contributed to a shift in the kind of crops grown, with grain production replacing cultivation of fruits, vegetables and legumes. Since little additional land will be available for agriculture, yields will have to be increased by energy-intensive agricultural inputs (pesticides, fertilizers, irrigation, etc.) which depend on nonrenewable fossil fuels. New energy sources will have to be developed, despite high cost or environmental effects.
