Abstract: A manual for health professionals, teachers, and home economists provides basic information and practical guidelines for promoting growth and detecting malnutrition in children. The diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of nutrition-related diseases such as protein-calorie malnutrition, iron-deficiency anemia, vitamin A deficiency, and diarrhea in young children are discussed. Emphasis is placed on nutritional requirements, the nutritive value of foods, and how to provide a varied energy-adequate diet for infants and young children. Instructions are provided for preparing a number of practical recipes for simple multi-mixes and for using family meal foods to make meals for young children. The importance of breast milk and breastfeeding is stressed and illustrated. Data on weights, heights, and lengths and their interrelationships along withfood composition tables, and a glossary are appended. (wz).
