Abstract: This publication reports on a conference which focused on the correlation between health indicators of poor children and economic and social deprivation. The participants discussed the most recent epidemiological information, identified the major pathologic entities, and assessed the causation of these pathologies and the potential for their amelioration. Topics include: infant mortality and morbidity, early childhood development, societal and political factors affecting service to high risk mothers and the state of the art of high-tech intervention and its potential for and limits in supporting the severly distressed newborn.
