Abstract: Soybean uses, agricultural and industrial, depend on the high protein content (40%) and high oil content (20%)in the bean. As a cash crop, soybeans provide a significant part of farm income in the light states of the Mississippi River valley. Developments have resulted from research on the physiology, genetics and related characteristics of the plant, and on agronomic aspects of its management and incorporation into farm systems. New varieties have been produced; pest and disease control measures are effective. The high probability of increased crop planting will depend on environmental factors, growth and development of the plant and the requirements of management and use. The environmental aspects of growth and development, assimilation factors, agronomic characteristics, breeding, management, production, processing, and utilization are discussed.
