Definition, prevalence, and correlates of iron deficiency anemia in black and white American women

Abstract: An epidemiological analysis of the prevalence and the correlates of iron deficiency anemia in white and black women in the childbearing age in the U.S. was made, using data gathered in the first Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A literature review concentrated on oral iron therapy in research. Data for black and white women were analyzed seperately because of what appears to be a genetically-caused difference in hemoglobin. Definitions of anemia and of iron deficiency anemia were based on a graphic distribution analysis technique. Study results indicate that the proportion of black women with iron deficiency anemia is nearly twice that of white women. Correlates of iron deficiency anemia--demographic, anthropemetric, dietary, biochemical, and medical history--were investigated. A definite relationship was shown between poverty and iron deficiency anemia in both white and black women.
