Abstract: A survey of 127 magazine and newspaper food editors solicited opinions on food trends and issues. They felt the most important issues to be food prices and inflation, fitness and obesity, food safety and food composition. Those surveyed thought the media should present more information on money savings, nutritious meals, and weight control; that industry should pay more attention to salt, pricing, nutrition, and sugar; and that government should not increase its involvement in food issues. While new convenience foods are welcome, editors feel they should be nutritious and reasonably priced. Low-income families, the elderly, small households, and individuals with medical problems are thought to need special attention. Editors saw themselves as reporters of fact and information. (ds).
