Changes in specific gravity and pH of compression-dewatered aspen fuel chip bales during storage

The compression-dewatering/baling process has shown potential to improve the use of green wood fuel. This study noted specific gravity losses of aspen fuel chips stored for 180 days in bales of two densities and compared them to losses of noncompressed, uncompacted chips. Chips were also either insulated or allowed to dry at a faster rate in screened boxes. At the faster drying rate, the chip bales of low density had only half the loss of wood substance compared to higher density bales or noncompressed chips. With insulation, specific gravity losses increased, but baled compressed chips lost approximately one-third less wood than controls. This suggests that wood losses might be reduced in slow drying conditions using this system of chip pressing and baling. The pH of water extract of chips was correlated to loss in specific gravity, and might be refined as a useful predictor of chip deterioration.
