A general breakdown of energy used throughout the food system and an analysis of food requirements and the body's use of food point to a suggestion for energy conservation. Overweight among adults in the United States totals about 2,3000,000,000 pounds. Getting rid of this excess poundage could save the energy equivalent of 1,300,000,000 gallons of gasoline per year just in unneeded food. An additional amount of some consequence could be saved by not having to heat those extra pounds to 98.6 degrees which is normal body temperature.
