A novel method termed ionic liquid cold-induced aggregation dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (IL-CIA-DLLME) coupling with liquid chromatography for the determination of benzoic acid in water samples was developed. Several important parameters influencing the IL-CIA-DLLME extraction efficiency were investigated. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the enrichment factor could be as high as 116. The calibration curve was linear with correlation coefficient 0.9978 at a concentration level of 1-500 ng mL⁻¹. Within-day relative standard deviation (RSD, n = 5) and between-day RSD (n = 5) were 5.1 and 6.6%, respectively. The proposed method has been found to have excellent detection sensitivity with limit of detection 0.6 ng mL⁻¹. Good relative recoveries for benzoic acid in tap, lake and river water samples were obtained and were in the range of 96.6-99.3, 93.9-95.8 and 90.9-93.8%, respectively.
