Nickel-barium exchange selectivity coefficients were determined for a montmorillonite clay by saturating 0.5-g samples with 0.04N serial concentrations of NiCl₂ and BaCl₂. The values for the reaction BaZ + Ni²⁺ ⇄ Niz + Ba²⁺ ranged from 0.65 to 0.78, indicating a preferential adsorption of barium.
