Interest in the study of the medical properties of plants has increased during the last decade and the present paper forms part of a larger study related to the biological and pharmacological screening of plants used in traditional medicine as diuretics. The stigmata (silk) of maize, Zea mays L., Gramineae, have been used for diuretic purposes in the Americas (Youngken, 1948) and in this work we report on the cardiovascular activity of a dialysate of maize silk administered intravenously to anaesthetized dogs. Recently, active substances with hypotensive effects have been isolated from a diverse group of plants (Wang and Liu, 1985; Inokuchi et al., 1986; Pantoja and Chiang, 1987; Uchida et al., 1987; Martin et al., 1988; Sharma, 1988; Tyler, 1988; Ueno et al., 1988; Vidrio et al., 1988).
