Genome and Transcriptome Sequence Resources and Effector Repertoire of Pythium myriotylum Drechsler

Pythium myriotylum is a soilborne necrotrophic oomycete pathogen that belongs to the order Pythiales. It is a causative organism of soft rot disease in several plant species, most notably in the species of the genus Zingiber (Kumar et al. 2008; Stirling et al. 2009). Soft rot disease is a major constraint in ginger production and it incurs drastic crop loss annually ranging from 25 to 100% in different ginger-producing countries around the world (Le et al. 2014). Increasing evidence suggests a crucial role for the effector proteins secreted by pathogens in controlling pathogenesis in plants. In compatible pathosystems, the effector proteins target susceptibility genes in the host and exploit host cellular machinery for its colonization. In incompatible interactions, the detection of effector proteins by the cellular immune receptors initiates the effector-triggered immunity (Peng et al. 2018; Sperschneider et al. 2015). Recent advances in genome sequencing technologies and computational biology have accelerated our efforts to better characterize the genome and effector discovery in pathogenic organisms (Sperschneider et al. 2015). Little is known about the genome and transcriptome characteristics and the effector repertoire of P. myriotylum. In the present study, we performed both genome and transcriptome sequence assembly of P. myriotylum and report the first Illumina-sequenced draft genome assembly and the transcriptome assembly of P. myriotylum grown in vitro on potato dextrose agar. We also predicted the effector candidates from the assembled genome and the transcriptome using bioinformatics approaches.
