Recruiting high-quality students to food science programs

An approach is used to examine 2 previously unrelated problem areas (1 in food science) and propose a strategy to provide possible solutions to each. The 2 problem areas are: summer programs for academically gifted young students; and increasing the enrollment of high academic achievers in food science departments in US colleges. The solution proposed is for food science departments to take the initiative to contact existing gifted and talented student programs and provide instructors for summer programs for gifted students for summer science classes related to food science (i.e.: microbiology, engineering, chemistry, and biochemistry, from a foods perspective). The benefits and mechanics of this strategy for food science departments are discussed.(wz)
