Dieting: is your body against you?
1987
Patton, A.
A technical report highlights recent findings in obesity research that indicate that overweight does not stem simply from lack of willpower, but rather is a complex group of factors that may or may not be under a person's control. Specific attention is given to: energy balance; genetic factors ("lean genes"); resistance to fat store loss; the role of lipoprotein lipase in controlling fat storage; defects in neurotransmitter function; food intake control from cerebrospinal fluid insulin levels; and dietary-induced thermogenesis. It is argued, however, that despite the complexity of such factors, weight loss for oveweight diabetics is still possible.
