Effect of Tungro Virus on physiological parameters in Rice cultivars

A field trial was conducted to determine the influence of rice tungro virus infection on physiological changes in six rice cultivars of three groups, viz., Taichung Native-1 (TN-1), MTU 1010 (Susceptible); Swarna, Nidhi (Moderately resistant) and Vikramarya, Utrirajapan (Resistant). The virus isolate induced a drastic reduction in the photosynthetic characters in the infected rice cultivars compared to the healthy control cultivars of similar growth stage. A considerable alteration in the amount of pigment content (chlorophyll A & B, total chlorophyll & carotenoids), in the present study elucidates a drastic reduction of photosynthetic characters in the susceptible rice cultivars when compared to moderately resistant and resistant cultivars. Stomatal conductance also partially limited the rate of net photosynthesis. Yield components and physiological characters were reduced by greater extent in TN1, MTU1010 and moderate reduction was in swarna, Nidhi, whereas it was least in Vikramarya, Utrirajapan.
