It's breakfast in Baton Rouge!
1984
Cole, Mary Eleanor
School breakfast has been served in the East Baton Rouge Parish System since the late 1960's. In 1976 the program expanded from the neediest schools to the entire system. Expansion accomplished several objectives. It saved jobs, because school enrollment had declined, resulting in the workforce being reduced. Many children who came to school hungry were offered breakfast; this tended to enhance performance in the classroom. This also helped working mothers who didn't have enough time to prepare breakfast. Eighty-six percent of the meals served are free or reduced-price; 14% are paid for by the participants. Almost all school personnel agree that the breakfast program is meeting a community need. (kbc)
