Acquired ventral abdominal hernia in a male giraffe calf

A male giraffe calf died in Sanjay Gandhi biological Park, Patna which was necropsied to ascertain the cause of death. Post mortem examination revealed it to be case of strangulated ventral hernia. Peritoneal cavity contained bloody fluid material along with yellow fibrin clots. Death might have been due to starvation, pain as well as toxemia developed as a result of necrosis of strangulated part of intestine. Ventral hernia occurs commonly in domestic animals but reports on wild animals are meager.
