Heat conductivity as an index of soil moisture

The results of these studies point out that the first three objectives of this investigation have been achieved, namely, (1) it has been possible to devise an apparatus for measuring changes in the heat conductivity of a soil at various moisture contents; (2) it has been established that heat conductivity gives a reliable index of the moisture content of the soil; and (3) it has been shown that changes in salt concentration of the soil solution do not materially affect the heat conductivity of the soil. Work is now in progress to achieve the fourth objective, that is, to adapt the principle of heat conductivity to measuring the moisture of the soil in situ. The results of this phase of the investigation will be discussed in a later paper.
