Surface Drainage in Transplanted Rice: Productivity, Relative Water and Leaf Rolling, Root Behaviour and Weed Dynamics

An experiment was conducted to quantify the weed dynamics, root growth, relative water content and leaf rolling on transplanted rice with the imposed surface drainage under controlled irrigated conditions. The maximum grain yield (3407 kg/ha) was obtained on continuous flooding followed by surface drainage at tillering (3083 kg/ha), whereas, the lowest grain yield was recorded under continuous drainage (1217 kg/ha). The relative water content (RWC) under continuous flooding was maintained at >90 % throughout the crop growth period and no leaf rolling were observed, whereas, continuous drainage recorded the lowest RWC with maximum leaf rolling followed by intermittent drainage. Imposition of continuous drainage also registered higher root attributes followed by intermittent drainage. However, lower root attributes were measured with continuous flooding. Continuous flooding suppressed weed density (65.5–74.9 %) and weed dry biomass (53–67 %) over continuous drainage. The density and dry biomass of weeds were lower during early stages. Imposition of surface drainage during tillering yielded similar results as compared to continuous flooding. The findings of the present study may be incorporated in the integrated crop management packages to obtain higher grain yield by effective weed management under prolonged dry spells.
