Footnotes to food tables. 2. The underestimations of intakes of lesser B vitamins by pregnant and lactating women as calculated using the fourth edition of McCance and Widdowson's 'The composition of Foods'

The probable order of underestimating intakes by pregnant and lactating women of vitamins B12 and B6, total folate, pantothenic acid, and biotin is assessed when calculating intakes using a computer tape developed for McCance and Widdowson's 1978 edition of "The composition of foods". The study involved longitudinal weighed diet records of 63 British pregnant and lactating mothers residing in Cambridge. Underestimation occurred when zero values were assigned to intakes from foods lacking B vitamin content values. The results indicated that, for frequently consumed foods, the intakes of all five B vitamins studied would be underestimated by less than 4 per cent.(wz)
