Impaired growth in infants born to mothers of very high parity

A longitudinal study of anthropometric data developed for 412 rural Gambian infants (birth through 18 months) revealed that maternal parity markedly affected infant growth. In the case of low parity mothers, first-born infants had depressed birthweights, but growth catch-up was attained by 3 months of age; in contrast, infants from high parity mothers had average birthweights with poor early growth and no catch-up growth. After 3-6 months, all infants evidenced severe growth retardation. The relevance of these findings to maternal lactation performance is discussed.(wz)
