Structure and development of stomata in some leptosporangiate ferns

The structure and development of stomata are described for 17 species of leptosporangiate ferns. In these species the mature stomata are anomocytic, diacytic, Pyrrosia(applied), tetracytic, suspended, or floating type. Stomata are present on both surfaces of floating as well as sub merged leaves of Azolla and Marsilea. In a few species twin stomata, arrested development, and persistent stomatal initials are present Floating stomata result from disintegration of the anticlinal suspending wall in Pleopeltis, and by detachment and displacement in Azolla pinnata. The development of stomata is haplocheilic, syndetocheilic, or syndetohaplocheilic. In Cyatheaspinulosa the guard cell nuclei divide amitotically and the resulting two daughter nuclei occupy the opposite poles of the guard cells.
