The Accumulation of Cadmium in Soils and Selected Vegetables Cultivated in the Allotment Gardens of Rzeszów

The research presents the results of determining the cadmium content in soils and vegetables (carrot and celery roots and leaves) from allotment gardens in Rzeszów. Beside basic physico-chemical soil properties, cadmium content (AAS technique) in perchloric acid and the extract of 1 mol HCl·dm⁻³ were also determined in material collected from 11 groups of allotment gardens. The content of Cd in vegetables was determined in soluble H₂SO₄, HNO₃, and H₂SO₄. The content of cadmium in soil was variable (0.21-0.99 mg·kg⁻¹) and its average concentration reached 0.42 mg·kg⁻¹. Total Cd content was statistically correlated with soil particle size fractions (< 0.02 mm). As much as 95% of the soils exhibited a natural content (0°) of Cd and 5% of the soils showed increased levels of cadmium (I°). The soils and vegetables from allotment gardens located near busy roads were more polluted by cadmium. The excess of the critical contents of cadmium (0.15 mg·kg⁻¹) in carrot and celery disqualifies these vegetables for consumption.
